Abstract
Republicanism has understood itself as a radical movement, committed to the idea of a United Ireland—a political entity based upon socialist principles. Involvement in the political process has brought considerable success in the form of elected representatives in Northern Ireland, the Republic and Westminster. The discourse of republicanism has undergone a significant transformation as Sinn Féin has sought to widen its electoral appeal. The transformation of the language of republicanism has been gradual and incremental, posing the question of whether Sinn Féin has a political agenda beyond electoral success.
